It uses the policy analysis matrix (PAM) as a tool and the heterogeneous agent model. Unlike previous studies, it assesses the competitiveness at the microeconomic level. The data used were collected in Benin from 265 rice farmers selected randomly. The results indicate that rice production is financially profitable for 84.2 % of the farmers and economically profitable for 63.4 % of them. Rice farmers do not have a comparative advantage on average in rice production. However, the analysis of the distribution of domestic resource costs (DRC) indicates that 63.4 % of rice farmers have a comparative advantage in rice production. The effective and nominal protection coefficients indicate that the majority of producers are subsidized. Yield, unit cost of labour and price of fertilizers are the main determinants of the producers’ competitiveness.

[Thesagri] vinNote de contenu : International trade theory suggests that advanced trade integration may lead to a higher level of intra-industry trade. The enlargement of the European Union (EU) during the last decade is a good example to analyse the intra-industry trade in wine products. The aim of the paper is to analyse the pattern and drivers of horizontal intra-industry trade in the wine sector within the EU between 2000 and 2011. We employ an empirical strategy developed by Cieślik (2005) to test Helpman and Krugman (1985) model. We find a growing trend in intra-industry trade with dominance of vertical intra-industry trade. Estimations suggest that Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany report the highest level of intra-industry trade within the EU. The level of intra-industry trade is highest among old member states. Empirical evidence indicates that the standard intra-industry theory finds some support in our data when we control for the sum of capital to labour ratios in the estimated equations instead of relative country-size variables. We find that the EU enlargement positively influences total and vertical intra-industry trade while it has negative impacts on horizontal intra-industry trade. Distance has negative effects on all types of intra-industry trade.

Our study finds that the average technical efficiency of tea production is only about 41 %. Among extension policy measures available to farmers, only training on production inputs has an improving impact on technical efficiency. Other features of policy have no significant effect, contrary to the expectation. The adoption of the oldest variety “Trung-Du” is not a source of inefficiency while the effects of other new varieties are insignificant. The results indicate that there is a great potential for improving production efficiency in the region of the study.

[Thesagri] travail des femmesNote de contenu : While women’s contributions to French agriculture are increasingly recognized, less clear is whether increasing visibility translates into empowerment opportunities. Using qualitative data drawn from interviews with French value-added farmers with diverse life experiences and trajectories, we examine how women have been able to achieve empowerment and the ways in which value-added agriculture specifically fosters an empowering context. We adopt a conceptualization of empowerment from the development scholarship in order to establish a baseline for scrutiny, viewing empowerment as a multidimensional process constituting the “power to” realize one’s goals, the opportunity to exercise “power with” others and the ability to find and nurture “power within” the self. The findings of this study indicate that through the performance of value-added agriculture, women were able to engage in the process of empowerment. They were able to exercise authority in the daily management of their farm operation, explore and define their own methods of work, to express creativity, satisfy needs for social ties and build a professional identity. However, our results also suggest the persistence of patriarchal and agrarian ideology, undermining the empowerment process. We conclude by discussing the context of empowerment which might mediate this experience for women farmers.
