Commercial production of the channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in the USA has increased exponentially since 1970. In that year, the weight of catfish processed was about 0.3 million kg. In 1984, the figure was 70 million kg. Most production is in the southeast USA, and the main State involved is Mississippi. The species is ideally suited to pond culture, and catfish flesh has a mild, highly esteemed flavour. The aim of this multi-author volume is to provide an overall summary of all aspects of culturing the channel catfish, for producers, fish biologists and research workers. The opening chapter gives an overview of commercial catfish production, after which there are chapters on pond culture, high density culture systems, hydrology and pond construction, water quality, reproductive biology, genetics and breeding, nutrition and feeding, infectious diseases, non-infectious diseases, processing and economics. Most of the chapters are comprehensive reviews of their fields, with extensive bibliographies. For instance, the reproduction chapter has about 200 references, and the genetics chapter about 120. The book will be an invaluable reference text for aquaculturists, and for biologists wishing to read up on any of the wide range of topics included. |
